Meghalaya NGO seeks CBI probe into illegal coal mining politicos-cops nexus

In a memorandum submitted to the PMO, HITO President Donbok Dkhar alleged, transportation of illegal coal by the Meghalaya based coal mafias is on and these are well connected from politicians to police officials, which is causing huge loss of revenue to the State which is starved for funds.

Shillong: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO), a pressure group in Meghalaya has urged the Prime Minister’s Office to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take action against the transportation of illegal coal by the “well connected” coal mafias of the state.

In a memorandum submitted to the PMO, HITO President Donbok Dkhar alleged, transportation of illegal coal by the Meghalaya based coal mafias is on and these are well connected from politicians to police officials, which is causing huge loss of revenue to the State which is starved for funds.

“It is public knowledge that illegal extraction and transportation has been going on since 2014 with a number of overloaded illegal coal trucks overturning from time to time making a mockery of the law enforcing agencies,” HITO President Donbok Dkhar said.

“This illegal and criminal activity is causing huge loss of revenue to the State which is starved for funds and we therefore urge your personal attention to direct the CBI to take action as this is an organized crime deep corruption perpetrated with knowledge of the “highest level of Government and Police” of both Assam and Meghalaya,” Dkhar claimed. 
Alleging that both Meghalaya and Assam police are compromised, the HITO leader said, “these illegal transportations are taking place right under their supervision as they receive payoffs from the coal syndicate.”

“It is open knowledge that to illegally transport coal the alleged going rate is Rs 96,000 per truck which is allegedly paid to all concerned high level allegedly from the Secretariat right down to the constable in both Assam and Meghalaya,” the HITO President alleged.

Dkhar further claimed that the payoffs are received by politicians from all the political parties including several Ministers in the incumbent government. 
“We are also learning that there is an alleged official list circulated strictly only among the “high-level” which allegedly includes the amount of payoffs by this powerful syndicate,” he claimed.
Dkhar further claimed that the list also includes names of Meghalaya NGOs and media personnel 
both from the print and electronic who also “receive a share of the loot.”
