Meghalaya Congress Dr Azad Zaman passes away

The soft-spoken Congress legislator had first plunged into electoral politics in 2013 State Assembly elections as an Independent candidate but lost.

Shillong: Meghalaya’s opposition Congress legislator, Dr. Azad Zaman passed away on Thursday following a cardiac arrest. He was 47.

Family sources said Dr. Zaman passed away at his private residence in Rajabala around 2 a.m.

Dr. Zaman was in Rajabala campaigning for his younger brother who is contesting the upcoming election to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.

The soft-spoken Congress legislator had first plunged into electoral politics in 2013 State Assembly elections as an Independent candidate but lost.

In his second attempt, Dr. Zaman won the assembly elections from Rajabala constituency on Congress ticket.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has expressed shocked by the untimely demise of Dr. Zaman.

“Shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden demise of Hon’ble MLA of Rajabala, Meghalaya, Dr. Azad Zaman. Dynamic and young leader of the plain belt of Garo Hills who worked tirelessly for the people. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace,” the Chief Minister tweeted.

Condoling his death, Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh said, Dr. Zaman will be remembered as a dynamic legislator who dedicated his life in the service of the people .

Former Urban Affairs Minister and senior Congress legislator, Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh has also condoled the premature demise of Dr. Zaman.
