Massive poppy plantations destroyed at different locations in Manipur

Imphal: A team of Kangpokpi District Police led by SP Kangpokpi and SP NAB, along with a big team of 200 recruit constables from MPTC Pangea and 1 coy of MR/IRB conducted massive poppy destruction in an area of about 30 acres on the western hill range of Selsi Village on Friday, under Kangpokpi Police Station. 

Seven huts used for storing materials used in poppy cultivation, including fertilizers, salt packets, and herbicides, were burned. A case was registered at Kangpokpi Police Station, and some of the accused involved in the plantation are also identified. They will be arrested shortly. 

The whole operation was carried out under the spot supervision of DGP Manipur P. Doungel, IPS, ADGP L&O L. Kailun, IPS and IGP Zone I Themthing Ngashangva IPS and DIGP Range-IV. 

Secondly, teams of Churachandpur police personnel and 1st IRB, led by the Superintendent of Police, Churachandpur, and CO 1st IRB  along with 90 personnel,  conducted a poppy destruction drive in the forest area of Thinghangjang Village, CCP, on Friday.

About 65 acres have been destroyed and burned down on the spot, and one accused identified as the chief of Thinghangjang Village, Kamsei Haokip, 48, son of Otthang has been arrested.

A regular case FIR has been registered in this regard. 

Thirdly, a team of Ukhrul district Police, 6th MR, NAB, and the Forest Department have carried out the destruction of poppy-cultivated areas in the district of Ukhrul during December 2022 at different locations: Ringu ( Tungou)  Hill Range on 3 and 7 December 2022. 

On December 14 and 15, 2022, more than 20 acres of poppy-cultivated land were destroyed in the Champhung Hill Range. From December 20 to 22, 2022, more than 20 acres of poppy-cultivated land were destroyed in the Champhung-Tora Hill Range.

More than 40 acres of poppy-cultivated areas were destroyed, None of the poppy cultivators was found at the time of the drive conducted in these hill ranges, however, a few individuals who were earlier residing in the hill range of Champhung-Tora have been identified, details of the land owner of the hill range were collected; and verification of the same is going on. 

Fourthly, Kangpokpi district police teams, along with NAB, Forest Department, AR, and SDO, have destroyed about 10 acres of illicit poppy cultivation in Molkon and Phulaijang hill ranges under Saikul PS, This was in the initial stage, and more such destruction drives will be scheduled.

A FIR has been registered, and efforts are on to arrest the cultivators and landowners.
