Imphal: The Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) deeply mourns the passing of veteran film and theatre artiste Huirem Ongbi Ibeni Devi (82), wife of the late Huirem Motilal, a popular theatre artiste of yesteryear known particularly for his memorable portrayal of a disabled character in the hugely popular play Makhoisu Meeni. Ibeni Devi passed away on Tuesday, 25th August 2026, at her residence in Yaiskul Heru Hanba Leikai.
Ibeni Devi made significant contributions to both theatre and Manipuri cinema. Besides acting in numerous theatre productions, she appeared in several milestone films of the celluloid era of Manipuri cinema, including Yairipok Thambalnu and Madhabee. Her work reflected the dedication and quiet artistry of a generation of artistes who helped shape the foundations of Manipuri performing arts and cinema.
She was also the mother of the late Laimayum Ongbi Huirem Seema, a popular actress of Manipuri cinema, a testimony to her family’s deep connection with the artistic heritage of the State.
A cancer survivor, Ibeni Devi had been in declining health for the past three to four years and had been bedridden in recent times. Her demise marks a profound loss to the world of theatre and cinema. Her contribution to the craft and her place in the history of Manipuri performing arts will be fondly remembered.
The MSFDS conveys its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and joins the film and theatre fraternity in mourning the loss of a veteran artiste. May her soul rest in peace.
