Imphal: At least three people including a father and his son died after heavily armed suspected Kuki militants fired at Kwakta village in Bishnupur district on Saturday.
Reports said the Kuki militants started firing around 2 am towards Ukha Tampak near Kwakta ward number 8.
Y Pisak, 70, and his son Y Premkumar, 38 and their neighbour Y Jiten, 42 who were guarding their village died on the spot.
The three used to stay in a relief camp but had moved to their residences in Kwakata on Friday only after the situation had improved, news agency quoted police as saying.
Kwakta is a small village with mostly Meiteis and Meitei Pangal (Muslims) jointly living together.
Interestingly, the village, being one of the most volatile and hotspot areas for the last three months, has been on high alert and guarded by security forces 24/7.
Heavy exchange of fire between state forces and militants was going on near Phougakchao and in the vicinity of Kwakata, the report added. More details awaited
