Manipur: Curfew imposed in Imphal West district for two months

The Manipur government has already banned mobile internet services for five days from Sunday to stop spread of rumour and false news.

Imphal: Imphal West district administration has imposed Section 144 of CrPC for two months in view of the likelihood of serious breach of peace, disturbance to public tranquility and grave danger to human lives and properties in the area. 

District magistrate Th Kirankumar said on account of unlawful activities of some social elements in the district, the restrictions would be placed for two months with effect from 6.30 pm last Thursday (4 August).

It may be noted that the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) imposed an economic blockade in the state and a series of violent incidents including burning of three vehicles, attack on offices took place on Saturday. The ATSUM demanded introduction of the Autonomous District Council Bill in the Manipur Assembly and two Bills were presented and one Bill was passed. Police also arrested five members of ATSUM for imposing blockade.

As per the order, assembly of five or more persons which is likely to turn unlawful, carrying of sticks, stones, firearms, and/or weapons of any description objects which can be used as an offensive weapon is strictly prohibited.

The order comes following a letter written by SP Imphal West to the DC, Imphal West stating that there is the likelihood of breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquility in the district by some anti-social elements. 

The order further states that any person or persons who want to take out any procession involving five or more persons on account of socio-political, customary, or religious objectives or for entertainment should apply for permission to the DC Imphal West. No procession should be taken out without obtaining the required permission.

Agencies involved in the enforcement of law and order and maintenance of essential services are exempt from this order.
