Imphal: Manipur Congress observed the 52nd birthday of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday by distributing relief materials to people who were evicted from Waithou at a relief camp at Thoubal district.

Congress President K Meghachandra said there were many houses which were legally staying after land rights were given by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975 under 20 point programme.

The Manipur Government on June 12 last demolished 69 houses alleging that they were constructed within Waithou Protected Reserved Forest in Thoubal district .

Even after seven days of eviction as most of those who were living in the 69 houses were homeless people were living together in a nearby camp.

Meghachandra said the Chief Minister N Biren said some of the land records were given by some officials by manipulating official records however what about the people who became victims of misdeeds of government officials he said. The government should provide land to the homeless and make alternative arrangements so that those evicted can be taken care off.

Those evicted included senior citizens and students who were preparing for examinations and the eviction was done by giving notice just one day ahead of the eviction. It takes time to start a life altogether at a new place and most of them were poor people who don’t have land and money, one of the affected people said.

Meghachandra said there were no arrangements to prepare food for the affected people and there was no supply of drinking water hence the Congress party decided to provide rice, pulses, oil, other food items and essential materials. It is the duty of the Congress party to help the people who were homeless and will continue to help them, he added.

Where will the people go, Meghachandra asked as they are all humans who need care, shelter and food. People should not suffer for the wrongdoings of government officials and people’s rights and right to life should be ensured, he added.

Other Congress leaders also interacted with the affected people and assured them all possible assistance.
