Imphal: Manipur BJP president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi Sunday appealed for calm and unity, even as protests from supporters of some of the aspiring candidates who missed out on the party tickets mounted and at some constituencies took to blocking roads and burning BJP flags, banners etc.

Speaking to The North East Affairs, the BJP chief said that the selection of candidates was based on the survey conducted by the party earlier and inputs given by various karyakartas of the party.

She further said that as a party that believes in democracy, the BJP can fully understand the sentiment and emotions expressed by those aspiring candidates and their supporters and their rights to give expressions to those sentiments. However, Sharda said, this won’t have much impact on the party in the ensuing State Assembly election. Such incidents generally take place during the time of elections, she added.

Sharda also appealed to all karyakartas to work together and strengthen the party to bring a change in the state.

Regarding threatening calls of leaving the party by those aspiring candidates, the BJP chief also said many karyakartas may come and go, but the party will remain forever. Sharda also expressed full confidence of BJP winning not less than 40 seats in the coming election.

Earlier, speaking to this correspondent, N Loken, former Minister and aspiring candidate for Sagolband constituency, accused the party of hypocrisy and said that the party destroyed its own principle of believing in grassroots level workers and not in dynastic politics.
