Imphal: The 52nd Foundation Day Celebration cum Statue Installation and Unveiling Ceremony of N.G. College was held Thursday at the Jubilee Hall of the College at Lamphelpat, Imphal West District.

Speaking at the ceremony as the chief guest, MAHUD Minister Y. Khemchand Singh said that after reading the literature, he felt that the founder of the college, Nongmeikapam Gopal Singh, is the backbone of education and society. He not only tried to establish the Manipur Sahitya Parishad in 1935 but was also a founder-member. “I pay my sincere tribute for his foresight in doing things,” he added.

Minister Y. Khemchand said that the government will try to include science subjects in the course curriculum that was proposed by the former principal of the college. “We need to pursue the matter seriously so that it gets implemented. I will try my best to help and find an amicable solution to the matter,” he said.

Mention may be made that Nongmeikapam Gopal Singh was the founder of N.G. College. The college was an offshoot of a solemn meeting held on May 5, 1969, which gave birth to the erstwhile “City College” in 1970 as a night college at Tombisana High School. On June 26, 1972, the then “City College” was rechristened as “Nongmeikapam Gopal College.”

The college was converted to a full-fledged government college on a historic Tuesday, January 1, 1980. The college is now affiliated with Manipur University and is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Sections 2(F) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956.

At present, N.G. College is a NAAC-accredited college with a CGPA of 2.43 (B-grade). A three-person peer team from UGC visited the college on March 8–9, 2022. They assessed the status and the desired standards of the college for NAAC qualification, and declared the college qualified by accrediting NAAC on the 15th of March, 2022.

The ceremony was also attended by (Retd. DGP) & Ex-Deputy Chief Minister Manipur, Y. Joykumar Singh; Former Principal NG College, L. Manglemba Singh; Founder Family Member, NG College, Nongmeikapam Kholchandra Singh and Principal, NG College Ashok Roy Choudhury, as guests of honour and president respectively, among others.
