Tokyo: Tokyo will impose sanctions against several Russian officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, freeze all their assets, and also support the disconnection of a number of Russian banks from SWIFT, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Sunday.
“With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it has become impossible to maintain relations with Russia. Japan intends to take tougher sanctions in cooperation with the G7 countries and the international community,” Kishida said.
In particular, sanctions will be imposed against several members of the Russian government, including Putin, and their assets in Japan will be frozen if they are identified.
“The day before, Western countries made a statement on measures designed to isolate Russia from the world economy, including disconnecting a number of Russian banks from SWIFT. Western partners have requested our participation, and Japan intends to join the initiative,” he added.Â
