Imphal: Commemorating International Women’s Day on 08 March 2024, the Indian Army spearheaded a series of impactful events across Manipur, reaffirming its commitment towards empowering and uplifting women from diverse backgrounds.
Implementing the overarching theme of “Empowering Women: Accelerate Progress,” the Red Shield Division organized workshops, lectures, and skill development initiatives aimed at fostering awareness, health and socio-economic empowerment among women.
At Leimakhong Military Station, Manipur, the invaluable contribution of women serving as Conservancy Staff in the Military Station was honoured. Twenty women, responsible for keeping the Military Station Clean and Green, were felicitated by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Red Shield Division and Convenor, Red Shield Division Family Welfare Organisation. Their unwavering dedication and cheerful presence uplift the spirit of the Garrison, making Leimakhong a more inviting and habitable space.
In Yaingangpokpi, Manipur, the Army collaborated with healthcare professionals to conduct workshops on Feminine Hygiene for teenage school-going girls. Addressing a critical need, the workshops aimed to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene and common gynaecological diseases, promoting healthier practices and providing essential education on the proper use of sanitary pads. Additionally, sanitary pads were distributed to support the girls in maintaining their health and well-being.
In villages of Moreh, Manipur, the Army engaged with local women through a comprehensive lecture series focusing on Feminine Hygiene, Breast Self-Examination and the importance of contraceptives. Recognizing the prevalent stigma and misconceptions surrounding menstrual health, the lectures aimed to dispel myths, provide essential knowledge and encourage healthier lifestyle practices. The initiative garnered appreciation from the community, highlighting the Army’s commitment to holistic women’s well-being.

Further showcasing its dedication to women’s empowerment, the Indian Army organized a Women Empowerment and Skill Development Exhibition at Phugakchao, Manipur. Over 200 women from the local community, trained in various skills including Pickle making, Food Processing, Handicrafts and Samosa making, showcased their products at the exhibition. The event not only provided a platform for showcasing their talents but also facilitated market access, empowering these women economically.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Kushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), young women were registered and trained in job-related skills, supplemented by guidance on programming skills and opportunities from representatives of the Department of Information Technology (DIT). The event also celebrated the achievements of distinguished women personalities like Ms. Sarita Devi, an Arjuna Awardee in boxing, inspiring the community with their stories of success.
With these initiatives, the Indian Army reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the holistic development and empowerment of women across Manipur, recognizing their indispensable role in nation-building and societal progress.
