Agartala: The opposition CPI(M) and Congress finally struck their seat adjustment deal on Thursday with each other to fight against the ruling BJP after a long battle among the leaders of both parties.

According to separate statements issued by CPI(M) secretary Jitendra Choudhury and Congress president Birjit Sinha, the CPI(M) will contest 43 seats and the Congress will contest 13. The CPI, Forward Bloc, and RSP will fight for each of the seats, and both parties will support an independent candidate running in the city’s Ramnagar constituency.

“Since we have not reached an agreement, the CPI-M filed nominations in 60 assembly constituencies on the last day of nomination. The Congress has also fielded candidates in 16 seats, more than doubling the number of seats where left-wing parties have already nominated candidates. Today, we have withdrawn candidates from 17 seats and Congress from three seats,” said Choudhury.

He stated that the people of Tripura have been desperately attempting to persuade the Congress and the CPI(M) to unite against the BJP’s five years of misrule, during which people lost democratic rights and were subjected to continuous oppression, violent attacks, massive corruption of public funds, and underdevelopment.

“The BJP leaders at the centre never considered the people’s sentiment but rather used police and central agencies to suppress the voice of the people. Therefore, when people across the state, even a section of BJP supporters, wanted a joint fight against the BJP’s anti-people activities, we finally agreed to come together,” Choudhury opined, adding that the parties worked hard to minimise the multi-cornered fight in the constituency and succeeded.

He went on to say that both the CPI(M) and the Congress tried to bring TIPRA Motha into the seat-allocation talks, but it failed because of its stance: “written commitment for greater Tipraland,” which the parties couldn’t do in the form they wanted, and that “Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman also wanted to defeat the BJP, and all want a one-on-one fight against saffron.”

Congress chief Sinha, on the other hand, stated that Congress joined forces with the CPI(M) to defeat the BJP. Initially, Congress wanted to fight for 27 seats but finally fielded 16 candidates. Following the final rounds of debate, Congress removed three candidates and the CPI(M) withdrew 13 candidates.

“We will try to campaign together to ensure that votes are transferred from the Congress to the left parties in all constituencies and that the BJP is defeated for the sake of the state. The leaders of our parties are working to finalize the campaign strategy,” Sinha added.
