Imphal: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh today attended the 44th Archives Week Celebration and Records Exhibition-2026 at the Manipur State Archives Complex, Keishampat, Imphal, organised by the Department of Art & Culture, Government of Manipur.
The Chief Minister expressed happiness at seeing the well-preserved collection of archival documents and ancient manuscripts brought by members of the public from their homes. Appreciating their efforts, he said that preserving such records reflects their love for the motherland and commended the initiative of the Department of Art & Culture in bringing these valuable materials into public view.
Yumnam Khemchand Singh said that the ancient texts (Puyas) of Manipur contain valuable records of society from ancient times, covering aspects such as archaeological remains, traditional house architecture, lifestyle, chronicles, stories of queens and knowledge of medicinal plants. He observed that these aspects reflect the scientific character of the knowledge system and the historical identity of Manipur.
He further said that these historical traits form the foundation of Manipuri society and that glimpses of the State’s rich heritage and civilisational history can be found in its ancient texts and archival records.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of Manipur’s indigenous script, stating that Manipur is the only State in Northeast India with its own script. He said that while many languages are spoken across different parts of India, the preservation of an indigenous script remains a matter of great pride for Manipur.
Expressing appreciation for those who have preserved and safeguarded ancient records through different periods, Khemchand said that the Government is considering providing incentives to such individuals as an encouragement for their contribution. He said that he had already consulted the Minister and Commissioner of Art & Culture in this regard and instructed the concerned department to submit a proposal to the State Cabinet. The Government, he added, is willing to provide all possible assistance to take the proposal forward at the earliest.
Recalling Manipur’s historical legacy, the Chief Minister said that the State witnessed the formation of what he described as the first democratic form of government in Asia on October 18, 1948. He said that such important events and milestones of Manipur’s history are documented in archival records, underscoring the importance of preserving them for future generations.
During the programme, the Chief Minister inaugurated the New Stack Room Building of the Manipur State Archives, launched the Reading and Teaching Programme on old archaic scripts, and released the Archival Publication-2026, “Colonial Tour Records of Manipur.” The Records Exhibition showcasing the rich history and heritage of Manipur preserved through archival records was also opened.
The manuscript donors whose contributions were featured included Nongmaithem Phulendro Meitei, Thoudam Bimolchandra Singh, Laisom Hemjit, Yengkhom Amuthoi Meitei and Chingakham Dorendro.
The event was attended by Minister of Art & Culture and Tourism Kh. Loken Singh, Secretary, Art & Culture N. Praveen Singh, officials of the department, archival custodians, manuscript donors and other invitees.
