IIT professor Teltumbde gets bail

The High Court granted him bail after hearing an appeal filed by Teltumbde in 2021 challenging the rejection of his bail application on merits by the Special NIA Court.

Mumbai : The Bombay High Court on Friday granted bail to former IIT Professor and Dalit scholar Prof. Anand Teltumbde in the Bhima Koregaon-Elgar Parishad Maoist link case.

A Division Bench of Justices A S Gadkari and Milind Jadhav, however, while stayed its own order for a week to enable the prosecution to challenge the order in the Supreme Court.

The court directed Teltumbde to furnish a surety of Rs 1 lakh.

The High Court granted him bail after hearing an appeal filed by Teltumbde in 2021 challenging the rejection of his bail application on merits by the Special NIA Court.

The 73-year-old was arrested by the NIA on April 14, 2020 and was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and other acts after he surrendered to the agency following Supreme Court orders.

The court in its order held that offences under sections 13, 16 and 18 of the UAPA were not made out and only offences under sections 38 and 39 were made out.
