Shillong: Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Dr. Raj Bhushan Choudhary, lauded Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage and unique landscapes during a press conference in Shillong on Friday, highlighting the state’s special significance in the country. The press briefing marked the conclusion of his three-day visit to the state after touring South West Khasi Hills district.

Dr. Choudhary emphasized the central government’s commitment to ensuring that Meghalaya’s growth is swift, inclusive, sustainable, and environmentally harmonious. He outlined several initiatives to promote the state’s long-term development while safeguarding its natural resources.

Speaking on infrastructure, the Minister stated that Meghalaya’s strategic importance within the Northeastern Region has made it a priority for infrastructure improvements. “Under the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti National Master Plan, we are enhancing road connectivity, improving rail and air infrastructure, and upgrading digital networks,” he said. These efforts, he added, are aimed at boosting trade and commerce while ensuring that development benefits reach even the most remote areas of the state.

Dr. Choudhary stressed the government’s focus on balancing development with conservation, ensuring that Meghalaya’s natural beauty remains intact for future generations. Initiatives such as the National Green Mission and the Climate Resilient Agriculture Program are being implemented to promote eco-friendly practices in agriculture, forestry, and other sectors. “Meghalaya is blessed with abundant natural resources, lush forests, and rich biodiversity. We are committed to promoting sustainable development practices to preserve this ecological wealth,” he remarked.

The Minister also underscored the significance of tourism as a key economic driver for Meghalaya. To further harness this potential, he noted that the central government, in partnership with the state government, has launched initiatives under the Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD schemes. These initiatives are aimed at developing tourism circuits, improving infrastructure at tourist sites, and positioning Meghalaya as a leading eco-tourism destination. “Our goal is to create sustainable tourism models that generate employment, uplift local communities, and preserve the state’s cultural and natural heritage,” he concluded.
