Imphal: On the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today, the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, graced the observance of National Cleanliness Day (Swachh Bharat Diwas) at Gandhi Memorial Hall, Imphal. The Governor led the gathering in paying floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Minister, Members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Chief Secretary, DGP, senior civil and police officials, and the public also joined in paying homage to the Father of the Nation. The occasion commemorated Gandhiji’s enduring ideals of cleanliness, service, truth and non-violence, and his vision of a clean and responsible society.
Addressing at the observation, the Governor emphasised that the vision of a clean and sustainable Manipur must be rooted in the timeless values and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi—truth, non-violence, simplicity, self-discipline and service. He noted that cleanliness, for Gandhiji, was not merely a matter of personal hygiene, but a reflection of inner values, civic responsibility and concern for the well-being of society. Highlighting the significant progress made in Manipur under the Swachh Bharat Mission in recent years, the Governor said that the collective efforts of communities across the State have contributed to cleaner villages and public spaces. He called for these efforts to be sustained through active public participation and responsible practices, stressing that every citizen, household and community has a vital role in building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Manipur while carrying forward Gandhiji’s vision of cleanliness and service.
The observation also featured a solemn musical presentation by artistes of Bal Mukunda Dev Government Music College, followed by a choreographic presentation by artistes of the Government Dance College, adding a meaningful cultural dimension to the occasion.
