New Delhi: A good democracy cannot survive without respecting and protecting human rights, Justice A K Mishra, chairperson, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) stated during a virtual session on Wednesday.

The statement by Mishra was made while he inaugurated the NHRC’s flagship 15 days online short-term internship programme. He said that the concept of human rights does not lay so much in legalese as much as it is embedded in our social behaviour and practices, having a spiritual tenor and tone.

The NHRCs chairperson said that India has a long tradition of respect for the whole of the universe, including all living beings as in the ecology and not just human beings.

“Therefore, it is necessary that we must strive for inculcating those values, which promote and protect human rights, and do not violate them,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mishra expressed the hope that the student interns will make the best use of the knowledge imparted by various experts during the internship program on different aspects of human rights.
Hundred and ten student interns from across the country are participating in the online short-term internship.
