Eight 5G use case labs set up in Northeast to strengthen innovation ecosystem

Shillong: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, Government of India, is actively promoting the establishment of 5G Use Case Lab across the country to foster innovation, support indigenous development, and accelerate the adoption of next-generation telecom technologies.

In Meghalaya, a 5G Use Case Lab has been established at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Meghalaya, providing students and researchers hands-on exposure to advanced technologies such as 5G networks, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), edge computing, and emerging telecom applications. The lab is expected to play a crucial role in skill development, research, and creation of region-specific solutions.

In the North Eastern region , a total of eight 5G Use Case Labs have been established, significantly strengthening the regional innovation and research ecosystem. These labs serve as collaborative platforms for academic institutions, startups, industry, and researchers to develop, test, and validate innovative 5G-based use cases across various sectors.

The 5G Use Case Lab initiative aligns with the Government’s vision of Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, promoting innovation, enhancing youth capabilities, and strengthening the domestic telecom ecosystem. These labs are expected to contribute to development of applications in sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, smart infrastructure, and disaster management, which are particularly relevant to the North Eastern region.
