Shillong: Pro-talk ULFA leader, Golap Baruah has expressed doubts that ULFA-I, led by its `Commander-in-Chief` Paresh Barua, will come forward for holding talks with the government.
“It would be good for the people of Assam if ULFA-I comes to the negotiation tables; if the government is interested to call for talks, it will be good,” Golap told reporters here in Meghalaya on Wednesday.
“But it seems there is a lack of communication between the two parties (ULFA-I and the government) and their (ULFA-I) demands are not something the government can accept,” the Pro-talk ULFA leader said, even as he welcomed the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s initiative to take forward the process of initiating peace with the ULFA-I.
On Tuesday, the Chief Minister invited the ULFA-I Chief Baruah to visit the state for a week to see the change that has come to Assam over the years.
On the other hand, Golap said that talks between the pro-talk faction of the ULFA and the government are going on.
“We hope (the next phase) will be held in New Delhi with the Government of India. I think the government realized that signing an agreement with us would help solve the decades-old problem in Assam,” he said.
Asked about the ongoing tripartite talks between the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), the Meghalaya government and the Government of India, Golap said he expects a solution before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
