Silchar: In a significant stride towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure in Silchar, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty inaugurated the much-anticipated Advanced Blood Component Separation Unit at S. M. Dev Civil Hospital on Saturday.
Accompanied by Cachar District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, the legislator heralded this facility as a game-changer in blood transfusion services, ensuring optimal utilization of donated blood and vastly improving patient care.
The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Additional District Commissioner (Health) Dr. Khaleda Sultana, Branch Officer (Health) and Assistant Commissioner Junali Devi, Joint Director of Health Services Dr. Shibananda Roy, Hospital Superintendent Dr. Arup Kumar Patoa, and Blood Centre In-Charge Dr. Arpita Deb. Their collective contributions played a crucial role in bringing this advanced facility to fruition.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty lauded the efforts of the hospital administration and healthcare authorities for realizing this long-awaited medical milestone. In his speech, he underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to the betterment of healthcare facilities under the dynamic leadership of Assam’s Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
“Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam’s healthcare landscape is witnessing an unprecedented transformation. This Blood Component Separation Unit is a testament to his commitment to ensuring advanced and accessible medical services for every citizen. Today, we stand at the threshold of a new era where no patient in Silchar will suffer due to the unavailability of the right blood components at the right time. This facility will ensure that every drop of donated blood is used to its fullest potential, saving multiple lives in the process,” he remarked.
Further elaborating on the impact of this new facility, he stated, “Previously, patients often had to rely on whole blood transfusions, which were not always the most efficient or medically appropriate. Now, with the availability of Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBC), Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), Platelets (PLC), and Cryoprecipitate, we can provide targeted treatment that significantly enhances patient recovery. This development will particularly benefit those suffering from severe anemia, trauma, cancer, liver disease, and bleeding disorders.”
Cachar District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, in his speech, emphasized the technical advantages of the facility and the importance of voluntary blood donation.
“Previously, the lack of component separation meant patients received whole blood transfusions, which were not always the most effective treatment. Now, with the availability of Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBC), Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), Platelets (PLC), and Cryoprecipitate, we can offer targeted treatment, significantly improving patient outcomes,” DC Yadav explained. He also praised the dedication of the medical staff and urged citizens to actively participate in voluntary blood donation drives to ensure a steady supply of life-saving components.
A key highlight of the inauguration was the announcement of NABH Accreditation for S. M. Dev Civil Hospital—an achievement that underscores the hospital’s commitment to maintaining world-class healthcare standards.
It is noteworthy that the newly inaugurated unit follows stringent storage protocols to preserve the efficacy of blood components: PRBC can be stored for up to 45 days at 2-8°C, Platelets for up to five days at 22-24°C, and Fresh Frozen Plasma and Cryoprecipitate for up to a year at -40°C to -80°C. These advancements align with the government’s broader mission to enhance medical services across Assam.
