COVID-19: Meghalaya death toll climbs to 165, 1,456 active cases

Shillong: Meghalaya recorded four deaths and 147 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the number of fatalities and new cases of infection surged active cases up to 165 and 1,456 respectively.

Also, the State recorded 90 more recoveries, pushing the number of recovered patients up to 14, 650 on Tuesday, health officials said.

Director Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War said the four COVID-19 related deaths were three from East Khasi Hills District and one in South Garo Hills district.

He said the new COVID-19 cases detected on Tuesday included 90 in East Khasi Hills, 22 in West Garo Hills district, 12 in Ri-Bhoi district, seven in East Jaintia Hills district, five in West Khasi Hills district, four in West Jaintia Hills district, three in South Garo Hills district and one each in East Garo Hills district and North Garo Hills district.

With 1055 active COVID-19 cases and 138 fatalities, East Khasi Hills, which includes State capital Shillong is the most affected among the 11 districts, followed by 143 active cases in Ri-Bhoi district, 94 active cases in West Jaintia Hills district, 64 active cases in East Jaintia Hills district and 53 active cases in West Garo Hills district, while the remaining districts have lesser cases.

On the other hand, the recoveries from the viral infection recorded on Tuesday were 53 in East Khasi Hills district, 16 in West Jaintia Hills district, 11 in West Khasi Hills district, seven in Ri-Bhoi district and two in East Jaintia Hills district.

Meghalaya has so far registered 16, 271 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Since the onset of the pandemic, 1, 11, 934 persons from outside entered the State, which had 30 containment zones as on date, official data reflected.

On the other hand, 23, 975 health care workers have received the first dose of the Covishield, 17, 835 received the second dose, 38, 270 frontline workers received the first shot and 25, 045 got the second dose, while 1, 13, 389 from among the general public have been vaccinated with the first dose and 13, 546 have been fully inoculated with the second dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 across the State, Dr. War said.
