Counting begins in Assam; BJP ahead in two seats

Guwahati: The counting of votes has begun in five assembly seats which went to the polls in the by-election in Assam with BJP leading in two seats and its alliance partner UPPL ahead in one seat in initial rounds.

As per the initial trend, BJP’s Sushanta Borgohain is leading for Thowra constituency while Rupjoyoti Kurmi is ahead in the Mariani seat.

The by-polls witnessed a voter turnout of 74 per cent. The polling took place on October 30 in Gossaigain, Bhabnipur, Thowra, Tamulpur and Mariani.

The polls in all these seats were necessitated for shifting of sides by two Congress MLAs to BJP and one AIDUF MLA to BJP while in other two the sitting legislators death resulted in by-poll.
