Kolkata: Reacting to Congress general secretary and in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi’s announcement that the Congress would allot 40 per cent tickets to the women candidates in the coming Assembly election in Uttar Pradesh, the Trinamool Congress on Wednesday said Congress was trying to emulate the party.
‘ Under the visionary leadership of @MamataOfficial, AITC has shown the way to ensure increased participation of women in politics, in this country. We’re the first party to give 40% seats to women in LS elections! ‘ the party tweeted.
‘ Amid such dire times, @INCIndia is understandably trying to emulate and one can only hope that this is genuine and not tokenism, ‘ the party said.
‘ If they are to be taken seriously, they must give 40% seats to women in states other than UP as well, ‘ the party added.
Priyanka Gandhi on Tuesday announced that the party will give 40 per cent tickets to the women candidates in the upcoming UP assembly polls next year to boost women empowerment in the state.
” I wanted to give 50 per cent tickets to women but the consensus was reached at 40 per cent tickets to women candidates in the upcoming UP polls. Now it will be showcased in national politics too and if other states like Punjab and others want to give it they are free to adopt this policy,” Priyanka announced in a press conference in Lucknow, where the banner also read,” Ladki Hu, Larh Sakti Hu”.
