Imphal: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee sought the present constitutional status of five JD (U) MLAs who joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) early this month.

In a big jolt to Bihar’s Nitish Kumar-led JD(U), five of its  MLAs had joined the ruling BJP in Manipur on 3rd September.

The JD(U) had won six of the 38 constituencies it had contested in the Assembly election held in March this year. Whereas, the BJP secured a majority of 32 seats in the 60-member State Assembly.

The JD(U) MLAs who joined the saffron party are Kh Joykishan, N Sanate, Md Achab Uddin, former DGP LM Khaute, and Thangjam Arunkumar.

Khaute and Arunkumar had previously sought to contest the assembly election on BJP tickets but joined the JD(U) after being denied candidature by the BJP.

JD(U)’s Muhammad Abdul Nasir from Lilong Assembly constituency remains the only MLA from the party in the Manipur.

On Monday, a Congress team led by AICC national vice-chairman, All India Fishermen Congress and senior spokesperson MPCC Ningombam Bupenda Meitei, MPCC vice president Hareshwar Goshwami, MPCC general secretary Md Amir Hussein and MPCC secretary P Bankimchandra Meetei met with the Secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly in his office and inquired about the present constitutional status of the JD(U) MLAs who have defected to the BJP.

According to Congress, the 5 JD (U) MLAs have defected to join BJP recently in Manipur Assembly.
