Guwahati: Congress in Assam has demanded the cancellation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pijush Hazarika’s candidature after an alleged telephonic conversation of him threatening a journalist over the phone surfaced.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has urged ECI to issue an FIR against Hazarika for creating fear and hate among the public and also filed a memorandum to Chief Electoral Officer, Assam Nitin Khade, on April 2.
BJP candidate Pijush Hazarika allegedly threatened Nazrul Islam, a television journalist over an audio call for airing a news report of his wife Aimee Baruah’s controversial election speech during electioneering in Jagiroad a few days ago which went viral on social media.
The journalist has filed a police complaint against the Minister of State (MoS) for health and family welfare Piyush Hazarika at the Jagiroad police station in Morigaon district.
The Gauhati Press Club also condemned Hazarika’s act. “Such a ‘power-drunk attitude on the part of Hazarika has taken politicking to a new low and appropriate action should be taken against the Minister by the Election Commission after verifying the authenticity of the audio clip that had gone viral in the social media,” GPC general secretary Sanjoy Roy said.
“We also demand that the safety and security of the journalists concerned should be ensured by the Election Commission and the State Government,” Roy further said.
