Committed to establishing peace in NE, says Modi

Guwahati: Averring that the NDA dispensation at the centre is working on properly rehabilitating all those who have shunned the part of violence and joined the mainstream in the Northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said his government was committed to bringing in lasting peace everywhere in the region.

“In last eight years lasting peace has returned to many areas of the region…that is why changes are being made. We have removed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from 23 districts of the region and are also reviewing the situation in Nagaland and Manipur.”

“We will establish peace everywhere in the North East,” Modi said while addressing a mammoth rally at Diphu in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district – his first stopover in a day-long visit to the Northeastern state. Modi is slated to lay the foundation of several new projects and inaugurate seven cancer hospitals across the state during the trip.

“Those who have shunned the path of violence and joined the mainstream of the country, our government is working on proper rehabilitation for them,” he said.

Touching on the sensitive inter-state border issue, Modi said, “With the spirit of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’, the solution to border-related issues is being sought today. The recent agreement reached between Assam and Meghalaya will encourage others also”. Modi also exhorted tribal people of the Northeastern Region to be more vocal in marketing their local products globally.

“We are promoting products made by the Adivasi and tribal people by making Adivasi museums in various areas. You need to be vocal for local products so that the products get global recognition,” he said at the “Peace, Unity and Development Rally’. will also lay the foundation stone of various projects in the education sector in the hill district.

At around 1-45 PM, the Prime Minister will reach Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh and dedicate Dibrugarh Cancer Hospital to the nation. Later, at around 3 pm, he will attend a public function at Khanikar ground in Dibrugarh, where he will dedicate six more cancer hospitals to the nation and lay the foundation stone for seven new cancer hospitals,
