Gangtok: The Block Development authorities visited Hangu Lake to see its status. They found the beautiful lake near Baba Mandir drying up. Earlier, Tourists used to enjoy boating there. Coinciding with the World Earth Day BDO Thendup Lepcha speaks to this Reporter about the Holy Tsongmu 12310 ft altitude and Important Hangu Lake.
Hangu Lake at 13000 ft has been drying up due to Climate Change with other issues.
“We are considering the rejuvenation of the Hangu Lake. It is going to be a megaproject. There are two Lakes near Nathula pass, we are proposing to bring down water resource from there to Hangu Lake. Next, the Holy Tsongmu was inspected. It has been reduced to deplorable condition by the ongoing construction nearby. But, the contractor carrying out the Tourism project adjacent to Tsongmu Lake has been instructed to clean the Lake littered with sacks and plastics thrown in the Lake. Even the Tourists do not seem to have been maintaining the required cleanliness. They have been throwing empty garbage just anywhere instead of stipulated places.” Joint Forest Management Committee workers also reported the matter to BDO in the first instance.
