Agartala: A Deputy Commandant of BSF allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself from his service weapon outside the battalion headquarters in Dhalai district in North Tripura on Wednesday night, police said here on Thursday.

The incident occurred in front of the main gate of the camp in the Jawaharnagar area when the entire area was in sleeping mode. The camp sentry on duty noticed the incident and raised the alarm; the injured man was immediately taken to Dhalai district hospital in Kulai.

The doctors attending declared him dead. The deceased is identified as L R Meena (49), a native of Rajasthan, who was posted at the M K Para border outpost in the district.

He came to the battalion headquarters on Wednesday on an official assignment and shot himself from his service Revolver, sources said. The deceased has been staying alone here and recently he joined duty enjoying leave, sources claimed adding that two separate investigations by Tripura police and BSF as well have been initiated to ascertain the reason for his death.

But, apparently, the incident was the fall out of stress and anxiety in his personal life. “We have registered a case of unnatural death and the body will be handed over to BSF after post-mortem,” said SP (Dhalai) Ramesh Yadav.
