Shillong: A package with “bomb inside” written on it was placed behind an indoor stadium in this mountainous state capital of Meghalaya on Sunday triggering alarm bells for the residents. But ultimately, the bomb disposal squad found that it was a hoax.
“The package on which was written “bomb inside” was placed behind the indoor stadium of the Nongthymmai Sports and Cultural Club located at Jingkieng here. The package was first discovered by the caretaker of the indoor stadium who alerted the club authorities who in turn informed the police,” Sylvester Nongtnger, the district police chief of East Khasi Hills, said.
‘Package to Sherwin – Bomb inside – warning do not touch the wires” was written with a black marker pen.However, the bomb disposal squad carried out a controlled explosion and found that a mobile phone and pencil were inside the package.
The incident assumes significance because the indoor stadium was next to the house of Professor Sherwin Sungoh, who is a sister-in-law of the Special Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang.
“We are investigating the matter to find out the person behind the bomb scare and the intention,” the police officer said.
