Shillong: Black flags were raised across Meghalaya on Wednesday to protest the killing of five civilians at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills district by Assam police.
The Khasi Students’ Union hoisted black flags throughout the state capital and also in other parts of Khasi-Jaintia hills region. The activists had some confrontation with the police while hoisting the flags at Motphran in Shillong.
Due to the prevailing scenario an uneasy calm prevailing in the state capital and most of the shops and business establishments in Police and Bara Bazaar area remained closed after the black flags were hoisted.
In Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills, the Garo Student’s Union and other pressure groups also hoisted black flags.
Meanwhile, the conglomerate NGOs of FKJGP, ADE, AYWO & FAF in protest against the police firing has called for a two hours Non Co-operation Movement in the whole of Garo Hills Region from 1pm to 3pm on November 25.
“We appeal all business establishments to close their shops. We appeal all public not to ply on the roads at these hours. We also appeal all office workers to do a pen down strike at these hours,” Pritam Marak, FKJGP president of Garo Hills Zone said, adding that all emergency services, including ambulances, pharmacies, MeECL personnel are exempted and students and schools too are exempted from the closure.
Meanwhile, the Police have tightened security following incidents of arson and a sense of unrest in the state following the incident.
