Bhitarkanika Park officials retrieve decomposed body of a 17.8 feet long crocodile

Kendrapara:The decomposed body of a male 17.8 feet long male estuarine crocodile was fished out by the forest personnel of Bhitarkanika National park from the Hansua river.

Ranger of Kanika Forest Range Manas Kumar Das said some fishermen on Sunday informed that a crocodile floating on the river water of Hansua.

A forest team led by Bijay Patra, the forester rushed to the spot and fished out the body of the crocodile from water.

The forest personnel later sent the body of the crocodile to Sansarfala nursery to conduct an autopsy which was conducted in the presence of ACF, Punamhira Hansda, and later buried the body inside Sansarala nursery.

During the autopsy ,a dead canine wrapped up in a gunny bag and polythene was found from the abdomen of the crocodile carcass.

Forest officials said no sign of external injury marks were reported on the decomposed carcass of the saltwater crocodile.

Though the reason behind the crocodile’s death is yet to be established ,but as per the preliminary finding it has been established that the male crocodile might have been killed as it devoured the dead canine wrapped up in a gunny bag, the ACF of Rajnagar Forest and Wildlife Division said.
