Assam: Sonowal files nomination for Rajya Sabha seat

The opposition parties Congress, AIUDF and others have decided not to field any candidates for the Tanya Sabha seat.

Guwahati: Union Minister for Shipping, Ports, Waterways and Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal today filed his nomination papers for a Rajya Sabha seat at the Assam Assembly Secretariat.

Mr Sonowal represents the Majuli seat in the 126-member Assembly. His nomination to the Upper House in Parliament was needed after he was made a Union Minister.

The former chief minister of the state was accompanied by current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sara, Atul Bora of Asom Gana Parishad and Promod Boro of the United Peoples Party Liberal (UPPL)- both are partners in the BJP led government in Assam.

The opposition parties Congress, AIUDF and others have decided not to field any candidates for the Tanya Sabha seat. BJP and its partners AGP, UPPL enjoys an absolute majority in the state assembly. The voting for the seats of the Upper House will take place on October 4.
