Guwahati: Assam recorded 76.09 per cent voting in the first phase of elections held on Saturday.
Till the closing time of 1800 hrs, 47 seats in Upper Assam where voting took place Saturday Nagaon district accounted for highest voting with 74 per cent and Nazira with the lowest turnout with 62 per cent.
The fate of 264 candidates today will get sealed in the ballot box for the 47 assembly constituencies.
Voting took place for the 47 seats of the Assam assembly seats across 12 districts in the first phase commenced at 0700 hrs today maintaining COVID 19 protocol.
According to the Election Commission, 81,09,815 voters including 40,77,210 males and 40,32,481 females are eligible to cast their votes at 1,1537 polling stations in the first phase
The fate of some of the important politicians got sealed in the ballot box including Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who is contesting from Majuli.
Assam Congress President Ripun Bora is fighting from Gohpur. Jailed farmers’ rights activist and president of newly formed Raijor Dal Akhil Gogoi is in the fray from Sibsagar.
Meanwhile, in former CM Tarun Gogoi’s seat Titabar, the Congress has positioned a new face, Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah. AGP President Atul Bora is contesting the Assam Assembly election 2021 from Bokakhat.
More than 37 incumbent MLAs are re-contesting in the Assam phase 1 elections 2021.
