Assam police arrest Maoist Central Committee leader Kanchan da

According to Assam police, 72-year Bhattacharjee who hails from Howrah, West Bengal has been a member of the Maoist Central Committee and was on a recruitment drive trying to build a Naxal team in Assam.

Guwahati: In a big breakthrough, Assam Police on Monday claimed that it has arrested a dreaded and wanted Maoist leader, Arun Bhattacharjee alias Kanchan da from Cachar district.

According to Assam police, 72-year Bhattacharjee who hails from Howrah, West Bengal has been a member of the Maoist Central Committee and was on a recruitment drive trying to build a Naxal team in Assam.

Briefing the media, Guwahati Police Commissioner Harmeet Singh said that there were over 200 cases against Bhattacharjee and carried a reward of Rs 300 crore.

“ We received information from central agencies in December about a person moving around bordering areas. We have been tracking his movement since then. On March 6, 2022 we were ableto nab Kanchan da who is a central committee member, cum ideologue and a strategist of CPI-Maoist from Thaligram, Nagadong, Patimara Tea Garden situated under Udarband PS of Cachar district,” Singh said.

Singh added that a laptop and a pile of Maoist literature has been recovered from Bhattachejee and one of his accomplice Akash Urang was also arrested from a nearby tea estate.

The arrested persons will be handed over to National Investigation Agency (NIA) for further interrogation, Singh informed.
