Assam-Mizoram border standoff: Union Home Secretary holds Chief Secretary-level talks

Both the Chief Secretaries of Mizoram and Assam – Pu Lalnunmawia Chuaungo and Jishnu Barua and the DGPs of both the states attended the meeting. The talks were inconclusive initially but eventually came to a mutual agreement following a second round of discussion.

Aizawl: A meeting to discuss the Mizoram-Assam border issue following Tuesday’s incident at the border near Vairengte was held under the chairmanship of the Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla at North Block, New Delhi.

Both the Chief Secretaries of Mizoram and Assam – Pu Lalnunmawia Chuaungo and Jishnu Barua and the DGPs of both the states attended the meeting. The talks were inconclusive initially but eventually came to a mutual agreement following a second round of discussion.

In the meeting, the withdrawal of police forces was discussed for a prolonged time after which both sides agreed to deploy/maintain their respective police forces within the area as was being done before the incident

After a further round of discussion, both sides agreed to the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces along the disturbed stretch on the border between Mizoram and Assam along NH-306 under the command of a senior CAPF official. The meeting also agreed that both state governments would work out an arrangement in coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs to facilitate the functioning of CAPF in the area within a reasonable time frame. The meeting also agreed to continue discussions mutually to resolve the border issue amicably.

Chief Secretary, Mizoram informed the Union Home Secretary of the problems faced by Mizoram due to the economic blockade by Assam and the destruction of railway tracks leading to the state’s lone railhead at Bairabi.
