Assam Cong urges EC to take up VVPAT counting at 20% polling stations in each assembly segment

Guwahati: Congress in Assam today urged Election Commission for taking up VVPAT counting at least 20 per cent of polling stations of each assembly segment against the existing norm of five to ensure impartially and transparency in the counting of votes.

In this regard, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has written to Election Commissioner wherein it stated that in the interest of impartial and transparency in counting of votes, Congress party urges upon you for passing suitable instructions to all concerned for taking up counting of VVPAT of at least 20 per cent polling stations for each assembly segments instead of counting only for five polling stations each LAC.

It also said a number of incidents like looting of EVM, suspicious discovery of EVMs in many places even in the car of BJP MLA took place which forced Election Commission to order re-poll in four places under three different LACs.

The letter which is written by APCC president Ripun Bora said that if the Election Commission agrees to allow counting in 20 polling stations it will be a landmark decision for strengthening parliamentary democracy and to ensure fault free counting.

Assam has gone to polls in three phases which concluded on April 7. The counting of the assembly elections would be held on May 2.
