Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday officially launching the free bicycle distribution programme for Class IX meritorious students in government and provincialized schools under the Chief Minister’s Special Scheme 2023-24 by the State Government at Collegiate Field, Tezpur in Sonitpur district.

Sarma distributed bicycles to 12,484 students of Sonitpur district under the scheme here. 

The scheme will cover 3,69,454 students of the state, out of which 1,60, 612 are boys and 2,08,842 are girls.

We distributed bicycles worth Rs161 crores to 3.7 lakh meritorious 9th standard students across public schools, 56% of them are girls, he said.

Free bicycles will also be provided to the meritorious students of class VIII from next year onwards, he added
