Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday tabled Assam Cattle Preservation Bill 2021 in Assembly which envisages imposition of a total ban on the transport of cattle outside the state.
Earlier, the Assam Cabinet had approved the Bill for introduction in the Assembly.
The bill has been introduced with an aim to bring to an end illegal cattle smuggling to Bangladesh.
If the proposed bill is passed in Assam, there will be a massive shortage of meat in the other northeast states. Beef consuming states like Meghalaya, Mizoram has opposed the move.
Beef is popular in Meghalaya and cattle from different parts of the country reach the state through Assam.
