Itanagar: A massive protest rally was taken out in the Ziro Valley of Arunachal Pradesh on Monday, demanding speedy trial and conviction of the accused in the Tasso Grayu murder case.
The rally, involving over 2,000 people comprising family members, well-wishers, Tani Supung Dukung (the apex body of the Apatani community), Supung Jugo Council, Supung Bulyang Council, Apatani Youth Association, Priest Association, Gaon Burahs and Gaon Burihs, started from Padi Yubbe outdoor stadium covering Dani Kunia Higher Secondary School, Pai Gate and Hapoli township culminated at the starting point.
The rallyists demanded speedy trial, conviction and capital punishment to the alleged accused involved in the murder of the octogenarian and a prominent public figure of Ziro plateau, Tasso Grayu.
The octogenarian, who was allegedly stabbed with a sharp weapon by an unknown assailant at Hari village in Lower Subansiri district on March 22, succumbed to his injuries two days later on March 24 at TRIHMS, Naharlagun.
Following registration of a case (No.08/2023) U/S 302/341 IPC at Ziro Police Station, a special investigation team, headed by SDPO Ojing Lego, comprising SI Hage Loder (IO of the case) and others arrested the alleged accused, one Nami Chattung, 70, a native of Hong village, Ziro from Banderdewa on March 30. Police also recovered the weapon used in committing the offence, Lower Subansiri SP Sachin Kumar Singhal has said.
During the rally, several prominent public leaders including former minister Padi Richo, former MLA Nani Ribia, state Congress general secretary Nani Rajen and TSD president H K Shalla among others spoke in favour of speedy trial, conviction and award of exemplary punishment to the alleged perpetrator of the crime.
District Agriculture Officer and the Hari village Employees and Pensioner’s Welfare Association president Tasso Butung, on behalf of the family members of late Tasso Grayu, extended gratitude to all for taking part in the rally.
