Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Retd) Dr B D Mishra has inspected the under-construction Sela Tunnel near Tawang which once completed will give access to all-weather connectivity to the strategically located border town and considerably reduce travel time to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) bordering China.

This strategic tunnel – the foundation stone of which was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 9, 2019 – is being constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under Project Vartak.

The Governor, who embarked on a three-day tour to Tawang district on Sunday for participating in the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebration, said when completed the tunnel will give the Indian Army speedier and hassle-free access to the Chinese occupied Tibetan border as it will substantially cut short the present road distance.

More importantly, the people of the State will have access to the all-weather road in the western region of Arunachal Pradesh throughout the year, without any disruption.

“It will be a boon in the event of medical emergencies and will be the most endearing gift to the people which is materializing during the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations,” Brig Mishra said.

Appreciating the technical excellence and project implementation merit of the pioneer road construction agency, the Governor exhorted all ranks of the BRO that the people of Arunachal Pradesh will always remember them for making their life happy and easy by giving them good roads.
The Governor also expressed his concern for the wellbeing of the BRO workers and emphasised that they must receive all benefits from the State welfare programmes.

Earlier, BRO’s Project Vartak Chief Engineer, Brig Harish Kumar briefed the Governor at the project site about the progress of the tunnel.
He also apprised the Governor about the ongoing projects including Nechiphu Tunnel, Bhalukpong-Chardwar-Tawang (BCT) road, an alternate route to Orang-Kalaktang-Shergaon-Rupa-Tenga (OKSRT) road and bridge construction in Arunachal Pradesh under BRO.
