New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday congratulated Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu for winning the country’s first medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Elated over the proud moment, Shah said every Indian is rejoicing her accomplishment.
Taking to Twitter, the Home Minister posted,”What a proud moment. Every Indian is rejoicing this historic accomplishment of @mirabai_chanu at the #OlympicGames. Let us #Cheer4India.”
Chanu clinched silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting category at the Tokyo 2020 as India won a medal on the first day of the Olympic Games for the first time in its history.
The 26-year-old lifted a total of 202 kg (87kg+115kg) and became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver at Olympics.
Chanu’s win comes two decades after Indian trailblazer Karnam Malleswari became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal. Malleswari won a bronze medal in the women’s 69kg weight category at the 2000 Sydney Games.
