Shillong: The Meghalaya State Zoo has achieved a significant conservation milestone with the birth of a Stump-tailed Macaque (Macaca arctoides), marking the first successful breeding of the species at the zoo.

The breeding pair was brought from Aizawl Zoological Park, Mizoram, under an animal exchange programme. The successful birth highlights the species’ adaptation to its new environment and reflects the quality of animal care, veterinary support, and scientific management at the zoo.

The Stump-tailed Macaque is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and faces threats from habitat loss, fragmentation, and human disturbances. The successful breeding contributes to ongoing efforts for conservation of the species through scientifically managed ex-situ conservation programmes.

The newborn is healthy and remains under close observation of the zoo’s veterinary team while staying with its mother and troop.

D. Sathiyan, PCCF (Wildlife & Biodiversity) & Chief Wildlife Warden, Meghalaya, described the event as an encouraging result arising out of continuous efforts towards wildlife conservation in the State. He stated that the success demonstrates Meghalaya’s commitment to scientific zoo management and conservation of threatened species, while also creating greater public awareness about the importance of modern zoological institutions in protecting endangered and threatened species for future generations.
