Assam Rifles marks World Asthma Day with awareness drives in Ukhrul

The combined participation of over 90 individuals across both locations reflected the success of the initiative in raising awareness, dispelling misconceptions, and encouraging timely medical consultation.

Imphal: On the occasion of World Asthma Day, Assam Rifles organised awareness programmes on 06 May 2026 at the Family Welfare Centre, Somsai Garrison in Ukhrul District and at Nampisha Village in Kamjong District, Manipur. The initiative aimed to educate troops, families, and local communities on asthma prevention, management, and overall respiratory health. 

At Somsai Garrison, the programme was conducted by the Battalion Medical Officer with support from nursing staff and paramedics under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (South). A total of 41 family members attended the session, which focused on recognising asthma triggers, maintaining respiratory hygiene, avoiding smoke and dust exposure, and the correct use of inhalers. The importance of early diagnosis, regular treatment, and adopting healthy lifestyle practices was emphasised, with participants engaging actively in discussions and clarifying their queries. 

Simultaneously, an awareness programme was held at Nampisha Village, attended by 56 residents including men, women, and elders. The medical team highlighted preventive measures, early symptom identification, and proper medication use, while also demonstrating breathing exercises and practical healthcare practices.
