Imphal: The International Mother Language Day was commemorated on Friday at the office of the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture (VKIC), Manipur Chapter, in alignment with global observances.
The event was organized by the Department of Linguistics, Naorem Birahari College, Khundrakpam, in collaboration with VKIC, Manipur Chapter, and the Women’s Studies Centre, Women Cell, NG Mani College, Khurai Chairenthon.

Languages play a vital role in education and sustainable development, serving as primary mediums for knowledge exchange and cultural preservation. Despite the existence of approximately 8,324 languages worldwide, many face the threat of extinction due to globalization and evolving societal changes.
A discussion on the “Importance of Mother Tongue” was a key highlight of the observance. Speakers included Ashok Athaly from VKIC, Manipur Chapter; Dr. N. Pritamkumar Singh, Head of the Department of Linguistics, Naorem Birahari College; and Dr. W. Saritarani Devi, Assistant Professor at Jadonang College, Noney.

Dr. N. Brindebala Devi from the Linguistics Department elaborated on the significance of International Mother Language Day, while Priyobar, Chandrababu, VKIC Karyakartas, and Dr. T. Sandhyalatana from the Linguistics Department shared their perspectives on the observance.
Students and other participants actively engaged in discussions, sharing their insights on the promotion and preservation of mother tongues. Dr. L. Sarankumari delivered the vote of thanks, and Dr. E. Manimohan moderated the session.
Earlier, Dr. Sujeta Beishamayum of NG Mani College delivered the welcome address. Khumanthem Belinda of the Naorem Birahari college presented ‘lengyan’ to the guests.
