Vir Chakra Major Ngangom Joydutta Singh’s bust unveiled at Sainik School, Goalpara

After passing out from the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla he attended the Indian Military Academy and was commissioned into the Gorkha regiment in 1977.

Guwahati: Major Ngangom Joydutta Singh was a cadet at  Sainik School, Goalpura, Assam from class V and passed his higher secondary exam from the same school.

On April 7, 2024, under the initiative of the school authority and Sainik School Goalpara Old Boys’ Association, his wife Captain Ngangom Subadani Devi (Retd) unveiled his bust at the library block of the school.

The Principal, faculty, his family members and alumni members of the school also paid floral tributes to the martyr.

After passing out from the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla he attended the Indian Military Academy and was commissioned into the Gorkha regiment in 1977. 

In October, 1987 he was deployed as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) sent by the government of India to Sri Lanka.

In the field leading as the company commander, he displayed exemplary leadership and courage under accurate fire from the militants while covering the retreat of the para commandos and 13th Sikh LI. When finally out of bullets he and two others from his company charged the enemy with their Khukris drawn out and engaged them in a hand-to-hand combat. In the process they killed many militants but eventually attained martyrdom while fighting.

Major Ngangom Joydutta hailed from Thangmeiband D M College Gate, Meisnam Leikai, Imphal West. He is survived by his wife and two children. His wife also retired as a Captain, NCC. Major Joydutta was the first recipient of Vir Chakra from Manipur.
