Imphal: The 174th Death Anniversary of Maharaja Narasingh was observed at Kangla Fort on Thursday by the State Archaeology, Department of Art & Culture, Government of Manipur.
The programme commenced with a performance of Shree Shree Govinda Ji Jalakeli Pala led by Maharajkumari Hemamanjuri (Sanatombi).
The chief guest of the function, M. Joy Singh, Commissioner (Art & Culture), Government of Manipur, emphasized the significance of the day and noted that it is one of the most important days in the history of Manipur. He mentioned that the day has been observed since April 11, 1850.
He eulogised Maharaj Narasingh for his significant contributions to Manipur during 6 years of his reign from 1844-1850, including shifting of the Royal Palace from Canchipur to Kangla, initiating construction of the two Kangla Sha, commencing of Mera Houchongba festival to promote National Integration, boosting the economy of the State etc, among others.
Maharaj Narasingh was a selfless and benevolent ruler and acknowledging his invaluable sacrifices and honouring him is indispensable for the current generation, he added. The Commissioner also urged the upcoming youths and people to follow Maharaj Narasingh’s ideals of patriotism and nationalism. He further expressed concern over the prevailing tense situation in Manipur and appealed to all to extend their support and cooperation to foster peace, progress and prosperity in the State.
Speaking as President at the event, Director (Art & Culture), Manipur, K. Dinamani Singh, briefed on the historical significance of the day. He also disclosed that plans are underway to implement a ‘Light and Sound’ project at Thangal General temple in Palace Compound, Imphal. He added that talks have been made with a Hyderabad-based company regarding the same.
He maintained that picturization of the history of Manipur through the ‘Light and Sound’ show will not only facilitate the youths but also the Tourists in learning the State’s history. He stressed the need to initiate necessary steps to preserve the historical monuments in and outside the state, to include the sacrifices and services of our great forefathers in the academic curriculum etc.
Laying of floral tributes at the Manglen of Maharaj Narasingh, presenting Guard of Honour, gun salute, reverse arms, sounding of last post, observing two-minute silence, slope arms and order arms by the contingent of Manipur Rifles, Tarpon Katpa at Nungjeng Pukhri, Kangla and paying obeisance to the Shree Shree Govind Jiu Jalakeli Pala were the main highlights of the event.
The programme was attended by Shri RK. Priyokumar Singh, Secretary, MNMC, as Guest of Honour; Dr. T. Brajakumar, Director, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur; dignitaries, Government officials and relatives of Maharaj Narasingh attended the function.
