Shillong: The first academic session of the National Law University (NLU) in Meghalaya will commence from July, Meghalaya High Court Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee said Thursday.

Banerjee made the announcement at an outreach programme with principals, teachers and students of higher secondary schools from East Khasi Hills and adjoining districts.

Justice H S Thangkhiew, Justice W Diengdoh, Commissioner & Secretary for Education Pravin Bakshi and Secretary, Law & Legal Remembrancer, Cyril Vincent Darlong Diengdoh were also present at the meeting.

The students’ online applications have started from April 21, and will end on May 21. The admission test is slated on May 28.

Banerjee said the merit list will be published on June 9 and classes will begin from July 10.

He also informed that for undergraduate courses a total of 60 students will be enrolled, with 20 each in BA LLB, BBA LLB and BS LLB honours courses and there will be 10 post-graduate students.

“Since the University is new and to attract applications from aspiring lawyers of the state, such outreach programmes will also be held across the state,” the Chief Justice said.

Banerjee said that the annual fee structure for the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is much lower than what private colleges and universities and other national universities charge.

The National Law University Meghalaya was the first National Law University established in Meghalaya.

The premier law school was set up with a mission to pioneer legal educational reforms, and to anchor the transformation of the Indian legal system through research and policy interventions.
