3 Manipur cops suspended for taking bribe to let off drug trafficking suspects

Kangpokpi police arrested two persons, namely Asheibam Thoibi Devi, 38, of Huikap Mayai Leikai, and Md. Abdul Matalip, 40, of  Thoubal Moijing Wangma Taba, along with the Winger vehicle bearing R/No. MN 06LA-3936 on.

Imphal: Three police personnel, including a sub-inspector, have been suspended, and one Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel was terminated from service for allegedly taking money from three persons to let them off the hook in a drug trafficking case, officials said here on Tuesday.

The development came after three suspected drug dealers were apprehended in Assam on April 11, along with 79 soap cases containing brown sugar being carried in a Tata Safari.

An investigation into the incident revealed the involvement of the said police personnel and VDF in the conspiracy of concealing and extorting money from the drug peddlers, they said.

Subsequently, the police officer and the two constables were suspended, and the VDF was terminated from service, according to a press note from the PRO, Manipur Police.

Four people involved in drug trafficking arrested 

Kangpokpi police arrested two persons, namely Asheibam Thoibi Devi, 38, of Huikap Mayai Leikai, Imphal East, and Md. Abdul Matalip, 40, of  Thoubal Moijing Wangma Taba, Thoubal District, who were travelling in a Winger vehicle, and seized 1.018 kg of brown sugar from their possession along with the Winger vehicle bearing R/No. MN 06LA-3936 on.

During the follow-up action, the team also arrested another two persons, namely, one Narendra Mahawar, 39, of Imphal West, who was involved in the transfer of money through Hundi for the drug consignment, and one Md. Abdul Nasir of Thoubal District, who was involved in this illegal drug business. 

The team also seized one Fortuner vehicle bearing R/No. AS-01DT 2876 from Abdul Nasir that was used in the transportation of drugs. 

The arrested persons and the seized items were handed over to Kangpokpi Police Station.
