Imphal: All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO), an apex body of churches and Christians in Manipur, announced on Saturday its resolve to fight against drug menace and poppy cultivation in the state.

At the same time, the organisation also expressed its heartfelt appreciation of both the Centre and the State governments for their relentless efforts to eradicate the menace of drugs in the state.

“The declarations of ‘War on Drugs’ and ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan’ are indeed remarkable landmarks,” the church body said in a statement.

While extending its unstinted support to the government of Manipur, CSOs, churches, and individuals, the Christian Organisation said it would persistently work for the eradication of abuse of psychotropic substances and poppy cultivation in the state without any prejudice in the larger interest of an enduring future.

The AMCO also appealed to all those individuals involved in the nefarious activity/trade to refrain from further indulgence in order to save thousands of precious human lives and degrade ecosystems as well for our common survival.

The government should formulate a comprehensive/concrete socio-economic policy (agriculture, environment, forest, livelihood) in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) based on rationality, sustainability, inclusivity, and freedom from prejudice for a progressive and harmonious society or state free from abuse of psychotropic substances, it added.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh welcomed and appreciated the All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) for taking a collective pledge to join the fight against drug menace and poppy cultivation in the state in support of the state government’s ‘war on drugs’ campaign.

With the church authorities joining hands to work at the grassroots level, the Chief Minister said, the state will soon be completely free of drugs.
