Imphal: Addressing government officials and media persons at his office, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh painted a grim picture of the state on Wednesday.
Despite investing so much effort of time and energy by his government and others, including civil society and the public, the problem of drugs continues to wreak havoc in the state, said the chief minister while releasing a book – ‘A Compendium of Important Decisions of Manipur Information Commission’, published by the Manipur Information Commission, at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Wednesday.
The chief minister even compared Manipur to a sinking ship, saying that if we don’t fight together and support each other, a small population like ours will one day vanish from the earth.
He said with over 1.3 lakh drug addicts in the state, his government is considering opening more state-run rehabilitation centres to bring them back into the mainstream. The concerned department will now closely monitor how the privately-run institutions are functioning, he added.
Stating that Manipur is a very sensitive and complex state, Biren expressed the need for all, including media persons, to remain vigilant and for all sections of the society to be united, have mutual respect, understand, and work together.
State Chief Information Commissioner, Oinam Sunil Singh, Education Minister Th Basanta Sing and other officials also attended the programme.
